STUDENTS OF JUNIOR COMMAND AND STAFF COURSE 24 CONDUCTED A FIELD TRAINING EXERCISE (FTX) IN THE GENERAL AREA OF NASHO FROM 12 MARCH TO 21, 2025

Toward the end of the Junior Command and Staff Course 24 (JCSC 24) program, students participated in a Field Training Exercise codenamed SHAMBULIA ADUI, which took place from March 12th to 21st, 2025. The exercise was conducted in the General Area of Nasho in Eastern Province and involved operations at both the Brigade and Company levels. SHAMBULIA ADUI is a Field Training Exercise (FTX) where students engage in a one-sided scenario with a controlled enemy. It is designed to evaluate students in various aspects of leadership and command, control, and communication (C3) during the planning and execution of military operations.

The FTX served as a culmination of all the theories covered in 21 weeks, providing an environment where various battle operations and special operations were practically exercised. The Junior Command and Staff Course (JCSC) enhances officers’ command and staff competencies by equipping them with the necessary attitudes, knowledge, and skills at the tactical level. It also prepares them for advanced military courses, such as the Senior Command and Staff Course.

The exercise is based on a conventional warfare scenario and is conducted in a controlled environment with a simulated Division HQ staffed by Directing Staff (DS). Students take on roles such as Bde Comd and Staff, support arms, Bn Comds, and Coy Comds. The enemy is represented at varying strengths, as determined by the control HQ.

The exercise was overseen by the Commandant of Basic Military Training Center (BMTC) Nasho, Maj Gen JB NGIRUWONSANGA, and the Commandant of the Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College (RDFCSC), Brig Gen A. Nyamvumba. The Commandant emphasized that realism is the most important prerequisite for effective training, as it enables personnel to train in a manner reflective of actual operations.
