Fundamentals of Security 18 to 20 August 2014

David Mwaniki (PhD), the Chief Executive Officer of GCS (Global Crisis Solutions), an independent non-profit human security Think Tank gave an interactive and exciting lecture to the students of the Senior Command and Staff Course intake three (SCSC03) at Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College (SCSC). Nyakinama from 18 to 20 August 2014.
The lecture was premised on the Fundamentals of Security, one of the Core Modules in the Post Graduate Programme of Security Studies run by the National University of Rwanda at the Command and Staff College. The three-day lecture discussed issues like Understanding security, State and human security, and the Economics of Security among others.

Who is Dr David Mwaniki?

Dr Mwaniki has a PhD in Development Studies from Uppsala University, Sweden, and a Master’s degree in Disaster Management from the University of Wisconsin (Madison), US.

Mwaniki has considerable experience in post-conflict reconstruction and development work and has served in various capacities in civil society institutions in Africa. More recently he was the Head of Humanitarian Affairs for Africa with ActionAid International and previous to that served as Coordinator for the Great Lakes with the International Rescue Committee as well as head of program support for the American Refugee Committee. He has considerable experience in PCRD (post-conflict reconstruction and development), peace support operations, conflict transformation, Peacebuilding, and human rights. He has worked in Sri Lanka, Rwanda, Burundi, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Liberia, Sudan, Somaliland, Uganda, DRC, Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Mwaniki currently teaches at the South Africa National Defence College (Executive National Security Program), the South Africa War College, Defence Staff College - Kenya (Military Operations Other Than War), the Nairobi International Peace Support Training Centre (Senior Mission Leadership Course) and the National Defence College – Kenya (Defence, Security and Public Policy Management). Dr Mwaniki has published on a wide range of topics including conflict resolution and mediation, Peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction, Climate Change and the Conflict Nexus, humanitarian responses and, development. He currently serves on the boards of Pax Africa, the Strategic Studies Centre, and the Africa Policy Institute. After the three days of interaction with Dr David Mwaniki, Course Participants attest that the session was not only lively but greatly beneficial as well. They now attest that they have a better understanding of the fundamentals of security across a range of perspectives. These include individual, group, regional, collective national, and ultimately global security.
