RPA Liberation War Study Tour and Allied Officers Familiarization Tour for Senior Command and Staff Course 06 From 21st to 24th March 2018

The Senior Command and Staff Course (SCSC) 06 conducted a four days RPA Liberation War Study Tour and Allied Officers familiarization tour as part of Military History Module, from 21 to 24 March 2018. The purpose of the tour was to gain knowledge about the planning and conduct of the RPA Liberation War and understand the key elements which led to victory for local Students and to broaden the Allied Officers understanding of the recent history of Rwanda including the Genocide against the Tutsi. Such knowledge helped officers to emulate and uphold the values of resilience, sacrifice and patriotism so much cherished by RDF.

The College considers the RPA Liberation War Study Tour as an important part of the course curriculum to disseminate RDF traditional values and inform knowledge about the planning and conduct of campaigns.

The objectives of RPA Liberation War study tour are as follows:
a. Understand the evolution of the RPA liberation war.
b. Understand the planning, conduct and link of various campaigns, operations and battles during the RPA liberation war.
c. Understand the role played by the leadership in the success of PRA liberation war.
d. Identify major challenges faced by RPA from the initial offensive to the victorious conclusion and assess how they were overcome.
e. Understand the enduring tenets that led to RPA victory and FAR defeat.
f. Establish the relationship between the success of military operations and the application of Tactical Planning Concepts and Principles of war

The College proposes a list of respondents that would provide the operational and tactical experiences of the RPA liberation war.

At the same time Allied students accompanied by Allied DS visited National Museum.

The areas visited are MURAMBI Genocide Memorial Center, Ethnographic Museum/HUYE and King Palace Museum/NYANZA in Southern Province, Kigali Genocide Memorial Center and Hero’s Cemetery in Kigali.

Allied Officers Familiarization Tour

The RPA Study Tour focused on the following areas:

a. RPA Invasion of October 1990.
b. Establishment of a Foothold (1991 – 1992).
c. Expansion and Consolidation (1992 – 1994).
d. Campaign Against Genocide-CAG (1994).
