MALAWI INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION
On 6th July 2026, the Rwanda Defence Force Command and Staff College (RDFCSC) hosted a ceremony for the entire community to celebrate the 62nd Independence Day of the Republic of Malawi.

On 6 July 1964, Nyasaland gained independence from British colonial rule and officially adopted the name Malawi. This historic milestone marked the birth of the independent nation and is commemorated annually as Malawi’s Independence Day. The occasion honors the sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering spirit of the Malawian people in their struggle for freedom and self-determination.

In line with the College tradition, the national anthem of Malawi was played.

The Malawian student, Maj Edward Thomas, addressed the gathering, expressing his honor in celebrating with the College community a significant milestone in African history: He noted that “Looking ahead, the challenges are no longer about colonial rule, but rather modern threats, like economic instability, climate change, and interference from foreign powers. However, the same resilience that drove our fight for independence, is exactly the spirit we need to face these issues today”

Deputy Commandant & Chief Instructor Brig Gen Jean Chrysostome NGENDAHIMANA. He took the opportunity, on behalf of the college fraternity, to warmly welcome all participants of Senior Command and Staff Course 15 to the RDFCSC. He highlighted:" Our college places great importance on recognizing the national heritages and milestones of every nation represented here. These celebrations remind us that, although we come from different countries and cultures, we are united by our common commitment to professional military education, mutual respect and solidarity. Today’s celebration, therefore, reflects the values of inclusivity, friendship and cooperation that define this institution. It is therefore with great joy and honour that, on behalf of the entire College fraternity, I wish the people of Malawi, particularly Maj Edward Thomas, here with us a very Happy Independence Day. Zikomo kwambiri."
